Bitcoin Trading Guide
for Beginners

Trading Bitcoin goes beyond simply buying and holding. This guide introduces order types, reading charts, managing risk, and choosing the right platform for active trading in Sweden.

Trading vs Investing

Before diving in, understand the difference. Investing (or "HODLing") means buying Bitcoin and holding it long-term, believing its value will increase over months or years. A DCA strategy is a form of investing.

Trading means actively buying and selling to profit from short-term price movements — days, hours, or even minutes. Trading requires more knowledge, more time, and carries significantly more risk. Most studies show that 70-80% of retail traders lose money.

Our recommendation: If you are new to Bitcoin, start with investing (buy and hold). Only consider trading after you have a solid understanding of how Bitcoin works and are prepared to potentially lose your trading capital.

Understanding Order Types

Market Order

Buys or sells immediately at the best available price. Fastest execution but you may get a slightly different price than expected, especially in volatile markets. Best for: quick entry/exit.

Limit Order

Sets a specific price at which you want to buy or sell. The order only executes when the market reaches your price. Best for: price-sensitive traders who can wait.

Stop-Loss Order

Automatically sells if the price drops to a specified level. Limits your downside. Example: Buy at 1,000,000 SEK, set stop-loss at 900,000 SEK to limit loss to 10%.

Take-Profit Order

Automatically sells when the price reaches your target. Locks in gains without needing to monitor the market constantly.

Reading Candlestick Charts

Most trading platforms display Bitcoin prices using candlestick charts. Each "candle" represents a time period (1 hour, 4 hours, 1 day, etc.) and shows four data points: the opening price, closing price, highest price, and lowest price during that period.

  • Green candle: Price went up during the period (close higher than open)
  • Red candle: Price went down during the period (close lower than open)
  • Wicks (shadows): The thin lines above and below show the high and low extremes

Basic Technical Indicators

Moving Averages (MA)

The average price over a period (e.g., 50-day or 200-day). When the price is above the MA, the trend is generally bullish. When the 50-day crosses above the 200-day ("golden cross"), it signals a potential uptrend.

RSI (Relative Strength Index)

Measures if Bitcoin is overbought (above 70) or oversold (below 30). An RSI above 70 suggests the price may be due for a correction. Below 30 may signal a buying opportunity.

Support and Resistance

Price levels where Bitcoin historically tends to stop falling (support) or stop rising (resistance). These are key levels for placing buy and sell orders.

Risk Management Rules

  • Never risk more than 1-2% of your portfolio on a single trade. If your trading account is 50,000 SEK, your maximum loss per trade should be 500-1,000 SEK.
  • Always use stop-losses. Define your exit before entering a trade.
  • Do not use leverage as a beginner. Leveraged trading amplifies both gains and losses. You can lose more than your initial investment.
  • Keep a trading journal. Record every trade with your reasoning, entry/exit points, and results. Review regularly to improve.
  • Separate trading and investment funds. Keep your long-term BTC holdings in a personal wallet. Only trade with money you can afford to lose.

Best Platforms for Trading in Sweden

Swedish exchanges like Safello are designed for buying and holding, not active trading. For trading, you will want platforms with advanced charting, multiple order types, and lower fees:

  • Binance — Best for advanced trading. Lowest fees (0.1%), comprehensive charting tools, multiple order types.
  • Kraken — SEK trading pairs available. Good charting. Professional-grade order book.
  • Coinbase Advanced — Upgraded trading interface with lower fees than standard Coinbase.

Tax Implications of Trading

Active trading creates many taxable events. Every sell, every crypto-to-crypto swap, and every closed position must be reported to Skatteverket on the K4 form. Use crypto tax software like Divly or Koinly to track your trades automatically. The 30% capital gains tax applies to each profitable trade.

Not Ready to Trade?

Start with a simple buy-and-hold strategy using DCA.
